CAMPAIGN AGAINST DRUNKEN DRIVING
Road fatalities drop by 183
Mumbai
: The decision to send drunk drivers to prison, which was
implemented a year ago, has yielded good results. There has
been a sharp decline in the number of people dying on the
city’s streets.
From June 2006 to May 2007, before the Mumbai
police asked the court to introduce prison terms for drunk
drivers,687 people died in accidents. The number
of fatal accidents during the same period was 719. The
Alistair Pereira incident, which became a watershed case,
occurred during the same period.
The Mumbai police, prodded
by the Bombay HC and public sentiment, initiated its
zero-tolerance policy for drunken driving in June 2007. From
July 2007, the police started imprisoning drunk drivers.
With this implementation,
the number of fatal accidents has dipped sharply—from 753 to
574—between July 2007 and June 2008. There has been a similar
drop in the number of deaths as well. A total of 602 people
died, 183 less than the corresponding figure of 785 for the
same period a year ago. Starting from the first prison term
for a drunk driver in July 2007, more than 7,100 people have
been sent to jail for the same offence till date.
Deputy commissioner of
police (traffic) Harish Baijal agreed that there was a
‘definite’ correlation between the large number of prison
sentences and the dip in fatal accidents and deaths. “The
spectre of spending nights in prison has had a huge sobering
effect,’’ he said.
“The media played a very
important role. They highlighted the issue and spread
awareness about this social evil. Even the electronic display
boards put up by us at major intersections has helped,’’
Baijal added
EX-MINISTER’S KIN IN COP NET
Aformer minister’s daughter and several
models and designers have been booked for driving under the
influence of alcohol in the recent past.
The Mumbai police have started focusing on
areas that have many discotheques and pubs, like Juhu, Worli
and south Mumbai.
The
ex-minister’s daughter
was fined Rs 3,000 after she was made to take a breathalyser
test in Worli on Friday night. Her car was seized as she
wasn’t carrying a licence, officials said.
She was one of the 143 people who were booked
on Friday. Around 30 models and designers were caught for
drunken driving on Thursday. TNN
