The Mumbai Traffic Police had started a campaign against drunk driving on 20th June, 2007 and till today, more than 28000 people have been caught for this offence. Out of these, more than 11000 people have undergone imprisonment terms varying from one day to 6 months. Around 12000 motor driving licences have been suspended. 17 offenders have been caught for the offence of drunk driving on two different occasions and their driving licences have been permanently cancelled by the courts.
To create more awareness about the menace of drunk driving, the Mumbai Traffic Police has tied up with Metropolis Health Care Pvt. Ltd. The Metropolis Laboratories give out a million reports annually. Their envelopes will carry a message saying
“ AVOID DRINKING AND DRIVING ,
SOME ONE IS WAITING FOR YOU AT HOME ”
In a press conference today, Dr. Sushil Shah of Metropolis and Shri. Sanjay Barve, Jt.C.P, Traffic released these envelopes to the press.
The Mumbai Traffic Police has also proposed to observe the week from 5th February as ‘No Honking Week’. To supplement prosecution by the Traffic Branch, Shri. Mujib Khan, theatre artist has agreed to stage street plays highlighting the menace of honking. The first show was staged at the lawns of Traffic Police Headquarters. Subsequently, this troupe is going to perform at various locations in the city and the suburbs.
The Mumbai Traffic Police makes a sincere appeal to all motorists and riders to refrain from honking.
