The increase in the number
of vehicles plying on Mumbai's roads coupled with the
further rise during peak hours, has caused the current
traffic signal system which works on preset timings to
become redundant, at times causing severe traffic jams.
The panacea to this problem lies in the implementation
of an adaptive signaling system that reacts to traffic
volumes.
In an effort to rule out this problem, the Mumbai Traffic
Police has decided to implement an Area Traffic Control
(ATC) System. This system consists of a number of signals
in a particular area that are interlinked in such a way
that any signal timing change is dependent on conditions
at other

intersections which are determined
through sensors/detectors embedded in the road. This
can be done either through a single linked pair, a linear
group or a complete network.
Under the MUTP II, the ATC system
will be implemented at 250 junctions in the city in
two phases. In Phase I, fully adaptive signal systems
will be installed at 50 junctions. Following the successful
launch of the same, installation of similar systems
at the remaining 200 junctions will be carried out with
the central control room being established at the Worli
HQ.
