Mumbai traffic Police had organized one mass oath taking
ceremony on 9th July 2008 |
|
In Mumbai, there are 1.5 million vehicles, many of them,
contributing in their own way to noise pollution by
honking horns unnecessarily. On
7th April, this year, we had organized a
No Honking day and it
had yielded positive results. That day was instrumental
in awakening citizens to the perils of unnecessary
honking. That day of creating awareness was also
supplemented with prosecution of offenders. Till date,
more than 37000 motorists have been penalized for
unnecessary honking and almost 2000 reverse horns have
been nullified. It was necessary to carry this drive
further.
Hence we took resort to
reforming the drivers themselves. If the motorists
themselves take an oath as to not honk horns; unless
absolutely necessary, this menace can be curbed
positively.
The Mumbai traffic Police had
organized one mass oath taking ceremony on
9th July 2008 at the
Local Arms ground at Worli. Around 20 female drivers of
the cab service 'FOR SHE ' and 70 male drivers of the
cab service 'GOLD CAB' wholeheartedly participated in
this endeavor and simultaneously took an oath at 2 pm
today that they would refrain from mindless use of
horns. The Joint Commissioner
of Police, Shri. Sanjay Barve himself administered this
oath to all the drivers.
Ms. Revathi Roy of For She cab
services and Mr Arun Sabnis of Fulora Foundation along
with Ms.Shilpa Athavale supported this movement to curb
the menace of mindless honking.
This is just the beginning. In
the coming days, this community oath service will be
carried to the Corporate fleets, the Banks, Insurance
companies. The Lions Club, the Rotary Club, the Giants
International and several other organizations will be
requested to support our endeavor to curb vehicular
noise pollution.

OVERDRIVE
AWARDS |
|
OVERDRIVE Magazine has
recently presented awards for automotive excellence and
the awards for focusing on environmental consciousness
and the Safety Award. These awards have been given for
the last nine years but the Green Award and Safety Award
are given for the first time this year. The Safety Award
highlights and honour efforts taken to improve the
safety of all road users – be it drivers, riders or
pedestrians - by efforts including making cars and bikes
safer by adding protective equipment to making the roads
they ply on safer by better traffic regulation and
strict implementation of rules and regulations.
The jury for the OVERDRIVE Awards that
include prominent personalities from the automotive
fraternity and senior members of the OVERDRIVE editorial
team have, after much deliberation, decided to bestow
the inaugural Safety Award on the Mumbai Traffic Police
for the efforts undertaken in 2007 in making the roads
of Mumbai city much safer-be in in the strict
enforcement of drink driving laws, discouraging usage of
mobile phones and other distractions while driving and
adoption of safety restraint systems like seat-belts and
helmets to ensuring traffic flows smoothly and thus
resulting in fewer accidents and mishaps. All these
efforts have made Mumbai one of the safest cities in
India to commute in, considering the volume of traffic
that flows, and thus making the Traffic Department a
worthy recipient of the award.
This award has been presented on 11th
January 2008 in a grand function at New Delhi which has
been accepted by the team of the Traffic Control Branch,
Mumbai.
Traffic Control Branch solicit strong
support and co-operation from the members of public to
initiate and implement various drives which will
ultimately strengthen the security of the commuter on
the road and ensure smooth traffic on all the roads in
Mumbai City.
